The hike itself is uphill no matter which way you start, but the incline is gentle enough to be enjoyable. I began from the Head Viewpoint, which, in hindsight, wasn’t the best choice. I’d recommend parking either at Stroove Beach or just beyond the Stroove Viewpoint, where there’s a parking spot. That way, you avoid having to climb uphill twice—trust me, it’s worth it.
Makulu and I set off under a bright, clear sky with calm waters in the distance. The weather was perfect—there’s something so reassuring and calming about good weather in Ireland. It feels like a promise of a perfect day ahead. My main reason for taking this hike was to enjoy the beautiful, sprawling heather-covered plains and get a light workout. Halfway through the hike, we stumbled upon a bench that faced the mighty Wild Atlantic Way, opposite too it was a charming house with a large tree beside it. It was one of those hidden gems that call to you, inviting you to sit, relax, and take in the view. I was incredibly tempted to explore this spot further, but I had a goal in mind, so I pressed on, with a promise to return to that abandoned house the next time I hike this loop.
The second half of the loop is where the beauty truly shines. The plains become even more vibrant, with heather-covered hills as far as the eye can see. You’ll also come across sheep grazing peacefully, adding to the tranquil rural vibe. As you walk, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Stroove Beach, Greencastle Cove, and the Magilligan Tower across the water. The scenery seems to grow more stunning with every step, especially with the sweeping views of the Irish landscape unfolding before you.
